FirstClef

Connecting parents with music teachers.

Design Challenge Outline

How might we help parents connect with suitable teachers in order to prepare their children for musical endeavours?

This was my first full project done as a UX Designer.

While I was studying at Brainstation, I was tasked with creating a digital solution for a problem space of my choosing. I immediately knew that I wanted to return to my roots in Music Education. I wanted to give back to the community that helped me by solving a problem that they have.

According to music teachers that I've surveyed, word of mouth is the most popular channel for a parent to find a music teacher for their child.

Project Overview

Parents want to find a reputable and trustworthy music teacher for their child.

“If the teacher matches very well with my child, the price and the location don’t matter as I don’t mind driving far and given that I can afford it.”

They don’t know where to look and would rely on word of mouth.

“Besides asking my friends, how else do I find a music teacher? Google?”

Parents need a convenient way to find a music teacher they can trust.

“It is difficult to find a teacher that matches well unless it is by fate or luck.”

Objectives

Behind the Sketches

This is your Feature section paragraph. Use this space to present specific credentials, benefits or special features you offer.

With word of mouth being a parent's most relied-on method to find a music teacher, comes the trust in the experience and opinions of other parents.

Therefore, other than just being able to find a music teacher in their area, parents want to find a music teacher that they can trust. In order for my app to achieve this, I would need to introduce a rating system.

If a parent were to read reviews by other parents on the teachers, they would be able to judge whether the teacher can be trusted and if the teacher would be a good fit for their child.

Rating a Teacher

As a user, I should be able to give a teacher a rating and a review for other users to see.

View Details on a Teacher

As a user, I should be able to view a teacher's details such as their teaching rate, their academic and teaching background, and more.

Search Function

As a user, I should be able to search for a music teacher for a specific instrument based on their location.

Who is First Clef?

I wanted the app to be the user’s first of some sort. Whether it be helping them find their very first music teacher, finding their first for a specific instrument, or even just finding a new music teacher for a fresh start. I then thought about what is the first thing you see in a piece of music. The treble clef. And that’s how FirstClef was born!

A fresh, organized start to their musical journey.

Comfy

FirstClef should give off a comfy vibe to ease the stress that comes with trying to find a teacher.

Warm

FirstClef should feel like a warm hug to use.

Friendly

FirstClef should feel like a friendly helper in the user’s search.

Organized

FirstClef should not only help the user be organized in the search but feel organized to use.
